Move It Or Lose It Series - Got Cardio?

The Scoop

My motto is, move it or lose it. I have written several posts about my health and fitness since I turned 50 and I’ve learned a lot this past ten years as I turn sixty this year. I know that if I stop doing things I normally do now, I may lose my ability to do them forever. I just read an article that said the average age people start loosing their ability to do things like climb stairs, walk or even normal day to day activities is 60. Well the blew me away. I turn 60 this year. Let me say two words about that, “Scared Straight!”

I have been faced with an interruption in my daily fitness routine. Although I am always trying new ways to add fitness into my life, one of my staples for cardio has been running. The last couple of years though I have been out more than in to running because of a recurring hip injury due to a seriously pulled hamstring pull in a 5K race. I think I get it healed but when I get back to running it comes back. Although I will never give up resolving this issue I have to find other ways to get my cardio.

What I am learning is that my perception of what is cardio has been wrong. I thought I had to be running, biking, hard core hiking or something similar to be really getting a cardio workout. This sort of depressed me because I really worried about my health.

There are many ways a fit person can add cardio into their fitness plan but if you are new to exercising or recovering from an injury you can still get in a cardio workout. Low intensity, steady state cardio is a method of cardio that gets your heart rate up to an aerobic level which is 60 to 85 percent of your max heart rate and keeps it there for 30 minutes or more. This could be a long brisk walk outside, on the treadmill or the elliptical. This has been my back up plan.

I had forgotten how much I loved to walk and how therapeutic it can be. Each morning while walking I clear my head, dream and plan all while listening to my favorite music. And I have noticed a pound or two fall off without cutting calories.

How do you get your cardio?

My Look

The weather here in Arizona has been beautiful for outdoor walks and I am feeling spring vibes. I am wearing workout gear in colors that hint of spring like navy, pinks and purples. My windbreakers is sold out (Thread and Supply Brand) but I am linking several that are really cute. I have wanted a pair of navy leggings for a long time because they are still slimming like black but make me think of spring at the same time. I’ve linked a few pairs of blue leggings that I like. I threw on my sneakers and was off on my walk.
