How I Recreate A Look

The Scoop

For every look I create, I have a muse. I am most always inspired by someone or something. By now I consider myself and expert at recreating a look. Here are the steps I take when making a look my own.

  1. I may be looking online or walking down the street and something makes my heart skip a beat. It may be the color of a flower, the sky or a lady across the street going home from work. Lots of times it is a picture I see online. So the first thing I do is think about what exactly is thrilling me. Is it a color, a cut, a detail or something out of the normal that attracts me? Or is it something classic?

  2. Once I identify the one or two things that drew me to the look I think about what I have in my closet that is similar. Maybe I don’t have a purple pair of jeans but I do have a green pair or maybe I have a purple top. I call that the star of the show. Once I figure out the star of the show for my look I work from there.

  3. Next I add support staff. If I went with a purple top because purple was what caught my breath, then I want a more subdued pair of jeans, pants or skirt. Maybe I’ll add neutral shoes that enhance the whole look. Everything else I decide to add is to support the star never taking away from it. You can’t have two stars either. Or rarely anyway.

  4. Lastly I make sure that I am wearing the look, not the look wearing me. I want this to look like me, not someone else. You do that even when replicating a look exactly just by wearing your signature jewelry ( jewelry that you wear all the time) . Or you can do it with your signature hair style. There are so many ways to be influenced but still be you. Even your smile can make a look your own.

Example below.

We have all seen this look in some form or another. A blazer with jeans, right? Well, blazers are everywhere right now and I wanted to wear mine. But I wanted it to be me too.

First I got out my navy blazer that is beautiful. It is classic and sort of formal or business like. But I am not business-like these days. I don’t go into an office anymore and I wanted to be relaxed and feel fun. So I wore a lacy bra, no top and buttoned up the jacket. But that wasn’t enough for my personality so I added a pair of distressed flared jeans. Then I added my leopard pumps and grabbed a cross body bag. Before I put the bag on though I took off the strap and added a colorful crossbody strap and that was that. It was a look inspired by so many others that I made my own. And it all started with a blazer.

When I share ideas for creating your own look, you should take liberties and do you. Even if every thing you have on is the same, it becomes you when you put it on. Your hair, your smile, your sass makes it you!
