Curtain Tales

When Old Is New

The Scoop

I’ve been sharing that I was going to show my new curtains with you when we got them hung. I am very happy with them for my piano room. They give it a vintage vibe that is very on trend right now. I could never adjust to the all-white look for so many years although I did try. But I need color and interest. Since these pictures were taken, I did move that sofa out and put a neutral-colored sectional in the room that I like even better. Having downsized from about three different homes has given me lots of options. This leather sofa is now in my master bedroom where I absolutely love it and I will share that room soon. Meanwhile you can get a glimpse of how this room turned out.

Below are the before pictures then more of the after. You can see we have an amazing view so I have the curtains open until after dark on most days.

This room is filled with sentimental things from family past, mostly my husband’s family. That is a very old Belgium cabinet (1800s) in the corner. The wood piece on the wall was created by my husband’s grandfather. I have his great-great uncle Beany’s rocking chair on one side and on the side, table is the family bible written in German. I have this amazing turtle clock next to it that came for Germany and was made in the 1920s. This sits next to the bible and a very old lantern handed down through the generations. I love old things with a story. Everything in the room is a repurposed piece brought from our other homes over the years.

Hanging Curtains

I did a lot of reading to update myself on hanging curtains. I decided since this room is more formal, I would hang mine with a puddle. This is one of the links I read. There are a few different puddle styles. I ended up with the Medium Puddle. I chose to hang them six inches above both windows. On the large window I went with four inches to the sides and the smaller window two inches to the sides. There are all kinds of guidance on the internet.

Curtain Puddles

  • Break Puddle (1/2 inch to 1 inch)

  • Medium Puddle (2 to 5 inches)

  • True Puddle (6 to 16 inches)

My curtains were supposed to be 120 inches long but they measured closer to 117 inches but I still had tons of length. I learned it is always good to measure each panel especially when they are that long. You don’t want to hang your rod and find your curtains are too short.

A Piano Room

Statement Curtains

For a very long time, neutral curtains have been the trend but I am reading more about new trends and the statement curtain is one of them. I think it works in my room because of my neutral walls and furnishings. This room is part of a large open floor plan but back on one end so it is almost separate. When you walk through the front door though that area is where your eyes are drawn.

I have decided for now that I will keep my walls neutral. That way I can play around with curtains and furnishings without getting too busy.

This isn’t curtain related but another trend in decorating that I enjoy is adding live plants. I added a couple in the room and it enhances the vintage look even more. Totally in love with this serene (I think of my grandmothers) vibe.

Decorating Style

As I update this room, I will share details. I am working on my office now and will share that when it is done. And I am excited to share our master suite decor soon. It is also very serene.

I am having fun mixing more lifestyle into my blog. To be honest I didn’t think I could do decorating or cooking as well as fashion but you all have been so generous with going along with me, I keep dipping my toes into the lake!

I’m linking these curtains, they come in several colors and have hundreds of amazing reviews. I am also linking the curtain rods. I always get my curtains from Overstock. The quality always blows me away especially for the price. I don’t get a commission for these sales so you know I really mean what I say.

Also linking curtains I bought for my bedroom and the rods as well.

Lastly linking curtains ordered for my office. They should arrive today.
